Lumetrics University: Fiber Tip Cleaning Demonstration

The importance of a good fiber tip cleaning regimen cannot be adequately expressed by any written sentiment here.  Simple answer: If you do not clean the fiber tip(s) of your Optigauge system before every use, dust and dirt particles that are found in the air we breathe will scratch the fiber connector.   If your fiber connector is scratched, your signal strength is degraded.  If your signal strength is degraded, you can probably surmise all of the problems it will cause.

Here’s how to do it:

1)Find your fiber scope and fiber tape.

2)Then remove the end of the connector, and advance the fiber tape to expose a clean sheet.  You can clean 6 connectors before the fiber tape needs to be advanced.

3)Move the connector end over the face of the cloth in figure 8 motions.

4)After 3 or 4 figure eight motions, inspect the fiber tip with a scope to ensure there is no dust or dirt on the fiber tip.

Here is what a dirty fiber tip looks like vs. a clean fiber tip:

In closing, please make sure you put great emphasis on the importance of cleaning a fiber tip before each and every use.  It’s so easy- even a marketing person could do it! (Me)
